ICBC comes down on fraudulent license operation

The Insurance Corp. of B.C. (ICBC), the province’s public auto insurer, says two arrests have been made as part of an ongoing investigation of fraudulent driver licenses. ICBC has also launched a civil suit against the owner of a Richmond, B.C. driving school, alleging driver licenses were issued for a fee without the required testing being completed. The lawsuit includes repayment of accident claims paid out by ICBC to drivers holding suspect licenses, as well as punitive damages and investigation costs. The public insurer, which also issues driver licences, is applying to the B.C. superintendent of motor vehicles to have the school’s license cancelled. ICBC and the RCMP launched the investigation based on anonymous tips received by both. More than 200 suspect license have been identified.”A driver’s licence is more than a permit to drive; it’s also an important form of I.D. We are pursuing that aspect of the investigation very diligently,” says RCMP acting staff sargent John Ward.
