A Durham region mother of eight celebrated Mother’s Day early this year when KRG Children’s Charities presented her family with a wheelchair-access van.For Kari Murphy an exceptional mom to eight children, seven with special needs the van is essential as it will support her families day-to-day needs and their continual visits to The Hospital for Sick Children. Kari Murphy and her husband Don first became parents to a healthy daughter, 15 years ago. Two years later, their second child was born a son quadriplegic and legally blind. For over 10 years the Murphy’s have been foster parents to six additional special needs children and were able to adopt one of those children, who, among other problems, was born with HIV. The children range in age from eight to 14; one child, now an adult, lives in an assisted-living centre for the disabled, but comes home on weekends. This very special family can now enjoy their new wheelchair van that is big enough to hold them all, together as a family.KRG Children’s Charitable Foundation was able to purchase the new vehicle for the Murphy family through Oakville-based Liberty Motor Company.Steve Wise, chairman of KRG Children’s Charitable Foundation and chairman and CEO of KRG Insurance Group, presented the van to the Murphy’s on behalf of the KRG Children’s Charitable Foundation.
