Weather tracking maps at the Canadian Hurricane Centre show Hurricane Earl could score a direct hit on Atlantic Canada sometime between Sept. 3 and Sept. 5Hurricane Earl, with maximum sustained winds of 205 km-h, is currently a Category 3 storm heading towards the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. “Based on the large-scale weather pattern and computer models, Hurricane Earl could possibly – repeat, possibly – affect weather in Eastern Canada in the Friday to Sunday [Sept. 3-5] timeframe,” says an information statement issued by the Canadian Hurricane Centre of Environment Canada.”There is a very broad range of future tracks for Hurricane Earl, which is now just north of the Caribbean islands. “The range of possible track scenarios [is from] as far west as Maine to as far east as Eastern Newfoundland. Thus, it is much too early to speak of weather impacts specific to this storm.”Meanwhile, post tropical storm Danielle is brushing past the south of Newfoundland on Aug. 30. “No significant weather is expected for the island of Newfoundland, however long period ocean swell between two to three metres will continue to impinge upon the Avalon and Burin peninsulas this evening,” the Canadian Hurricane Centre reported in an Aug. 30 bulletin. “Coastlines with a southeasterly exposure will be most vulnerable to the development of large waves, possibly giving rip currents.”Until it was recently downgraded to a tropical storm, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre deemed Danielle to be a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 km-h.
