Two recent investigations by the Insurance Corp. of B.C. (ICBC) have led to three separate people pleading guilty to filing fraudulent claims. In the first case, Cameron Louis Simpson of Surrey pled guilty and was ordered to pay $2,875 in fines and charges for filing a fraudulent accident claim. ICBC says Simpson filed a bodily injury claim stating he was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old which was involved in a single vehicle crash in April, 2001. The driver and another 18-year-old passenger at first claimed Simpson was a passenger because of the learner’s permit requirement that a supervisor at least 19 years old be in the vehicle. Both later changed their stories. In the second case, Gurpreet Singh of Abbotsford and Suhani Mabaraj of Chilliwack pled guilty to fraud and were ordered to pay a total of more than $3,500 in fines and restitution. The charges stemmed from an October, 2003 collision after which, ICBC says, Singh filed a false wage loss claim stating the he worked for Mabaraj when he had not.
