The family and friends of a 21-year-old rugby star, Sean Corner, is holding a benefit event to raise funds after the star player was paralyzed from the waist down during a rugby match in September.Corner was studying insurance at Mohawk College in Hamilton and started work at Economical Insurance in May. He was injured when tackled during the match. The game might not have been played had team officials known the Ontario Rugby Union’s catastrophic injury insurance had been cancelled just prior to the game. A spam e-mail filter deleted notice of the insurance cancellation, and officials with Corner’s rugby team, the Hamilton Hornets, told the Hamilton Spectator the exhibition game might never have been played if they knew the insurance had been cancelled.According to the Spectator, the insurance provided automatic eligibility for injured players to receive up to $500,000 without proof of negligence.Tom and Lorraine Corner, Sean’s parents, with the help of friends and collegues, are holding the benefit to raise money for their son’s care (Tom Corner is principal of Hamilton-based, Claims Services International Ltd. [CSI Adjusters]).The benefit will be held Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Michelangelo Banquet Centre, located at 1555 Upper Ottawa Street in Hamilton, Ontario. The doors will open at 6 p.m.The benefit will include live entertainment, prizes, raffles and entertainment by The Accidental Benefits. Tickets cost $40, and donations can be made by cheque payable to “Sean Corner Benefit Fund.”
