Environment Canada recently issued two tornado warnings for southwestern Ontario due to a report from a Ontario Provincial Police officer referencing a tornado touching down northeast of Fergus, Ontario and further reports that a tornado touched down in Elmvale.A funnel cloud also emerged around Bracebridge, but it has not touched down, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Isabel Ruddick. Thunderstorm and tornado warnings have recently been updated for “Tornado Alley,” an area north of Toronto that was devastated 20 years ago when storms spawned deadly tornadoes in and around Barrie. “That whole zone is really hot right now for tornadoes,” Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Cam Woolley says. These warnings, now downgraded to severe thunderstorm warning, follow directly on the heal of a major earthquake that recently hit the coast of California. The quake, registering a 7.0 on the richter scale, initiated a tsunami warning for the warning for the U.S., Canada and Mexico.The earthquake struck approximately 80 miles off the coast of northern California, and this meant the Pacific coast was in danger of seeing a tsunami, specifically, the warning was issued for areas from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, BC. The warning was called off approximately one hour following the quake.
