TORONTO – Officials are warning drivers in the Toronto area to be careful after a morning of heavy rain led to flash flooding in some areas on Wednesday.

Provincial police spokesman Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says some drivers have had to abandon their vehicles on the roads because they weren’t able to continue through the water.

He says others had to be rescued from their flooded-out cars.

Schmidt says drivers should be particularly careful when they see flooding, because it’s hard to tell whether there’s potholes or barriers underneath the water.

Fire officials in Toronto add that the safest option is to stay home.
