The risk of the city of New Orleans flooding will continue to grow in the 21st century, according to a Risk Management Solutions report. In framing the debate for New Orlean’s future, the report signals to those who hold a stake in the future of the city including insurance and government officials.”They must plan for a future that will undoubtedly be more hazardous than in the past,” the report concludes. The threat of flooding continues to increase due to a combination of three physical factors: The city’s location on thick delta sediments along the edge of an oceanic basin is causing it to sink at “geologically rapid rates”; global sea level continues to rise, due to climate change; and the level of Atlantic basin hurrican activity has risen, especially in and around the Gulf of Mexico.
