What’s new: In brief (September 06, 2004)

The friends of Mike Yang are staging two events to raise funds for this industry veteran, who is recovering from a serious illness experienced last fall. Funds are needed to help Mike and his family modify their home and vehicle to accommodate his condition and recovery. The first reception is September 23 from 5-7 p.m. at the Windsor Arms Hotel, Club 22, 18 St. Thomas St., Toronto. The second is October 7, at the Armenian Community Centre Banquet Hall, 45 Hallcrown Place, Toronto. Mike will be present for both events, and along with refreshments there will be a silent auction at each prize donations are being welcomed. Cash donations can also be made directly. Crawford Adjusters Canada has been appointed as the claims administrator by the Peterborough Area Flood Relief Committee to handle payments to victims of floods which devastated the area in mid-July. The claims come under the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program, and can include private homes or businesses. The funding provides for up to 90% of eligible costs for essential items such as shelter or other necessities of life.

Legislation passed in Ohio to limit asbestos-related lawsuits is a go, at least for the time being. Courts have blocked a legal attempt to thwart the legislation, which will stand pending appeal. The bill establishes medical criteria for the filing of lawsuits for asbestos exposure, and are an attempt by lawmakers to reduce a glut of thousands of cases filed in the state by people who have been exposed to the material but show no signs of illness. And accompanying act sets out similar criteria for silica-related lawsuits, and both bills represent the first statewide attempt to curb such litigation.
