Individual car and truck thieves could become the target of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia’s (ICBC) plan to file lawsuits against car and truck thieves. The lawsuits would attempt to garner funds to cover the costs of repairing and/or replacing the stolen vehicle. Currently, the ICBC’s initiative focuses on insurance fraud and auto theft rings that represent a group of individuals and suits that reach into the millions. The ICBC hopes trying individual crooks in civil court will serve these auto thieves with a severe wake-up call. As it stands criminal verdicts carry a penalty of little to no jail time. A civil court judgment, the ICBC hopes, will dole out penalties such as seizing the wages and or property of a convicted offender in order to cover the cost of the stolen vehicle.
