HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. – A two-day snowstorm that began Monday has buried central Labrador under a record-setting blanket of snow.

Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil said today the 75 centimetres of snow covering Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the second-largest two-day snowfall ever recorded in the town.

The record stands at 91 cm, recorded over Jan. 14 and Jan. 15, 2006.

Neil says 46.6 cm fell on Tuesday, which beats the town’s previous single-day November record of 40.6 cm, set in 1944.

Environment Canada data shows the storm also brought hair-raising winds to the island of Newfoundland

Gusts of 142 kilometres per hour swept over Green Island, in Fortune Bay, while houses clattered in 110 km/h winds in Bonavista.
