George Lightbound It is with sadness that CU announces the passing of George Lightbound. After a tough battle with cancer he died peacefully, on April 26, 2004 at home surrounded by his loving wife of over 56 years, Merle, and his two sons and two daughters. Lightbound was in his 81st year. He served overseas in WW II with the RCAF, and shortly after returning home in early 1946, he joined the United States Fidelity & Guarantee Insurance Company in the accounting department. Prior to going overseas he was a well known, up and coming football player, and after his return home he was invited to the Toronto Argonaut’s training camp. Upon hearing this, his immediate supervisor at USF&G insisted Lightbound make up his mind: he could play football or he could pursue a career in insurance. He chose insurance, and stayed with the USF&G throughout his entire career until he retired December 31,1984, as the CEO of Canadian operations. Lightbound served on numerous insurance committees during his career, however he was well known by most of his insurance friends as the unofficial DJ at various insurance conferences, particularly at the Superintendent of Insurance Conferences & the CUA/IAO Conferences. He loved jazz and big band music and he supplied a good variety of both. George Lightbound will be sadly missed by his many friends both in and out of the insurance industry.

Cyril MacKinnon The brokerage community lost a dear friend with the passing of Cyril MacKinnon on May 27, 2004. A long-time representative of the Insurance Brokers Association of PEI, MacKinnon was its president and director to the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC). MacKinnon was chair and managing partner of Concorde Insurance Brokers Ltd. in Murray River, PEI. “He was well respected by his past and present colleagues on the [IBAC] board and will be missed by all,” notes an IBAC statement. CU adds its condolences on the passing of a strong voice for PEI’s brokers. Cyril MacKinnon is missed by wife Dianne, children Chris and Dreea and grandson Gabrielle.
