Approximately 98% of risk managers recently surveyed by the Liberty Mutual Group say they use the Internet in carrying out their duties. The survey is based on the responses of 200 risk managers.

Approximately a quarter of the survey respondents say they spend more than five hours a week online, with research being the main purpose behind their use of the Internet. Communication with brokers and insurers via the Internet is the second most important use, the respondents indicate, followed by online claims handling. Over 15% of the respondents who had recently renewed their insurance programs say that they used the Internet to complete at least part of the process. The survey suggests that this level will rise to 27% of risk managers in the year ahead. In addition, the survey results indicate that more than twice as many risk managers currently receive certificates of insurance online than that of a year ago. Nearly a third of the risk managers appear to be using the Internet for filing claims, the survey suggests, with this number likely to jump to more than half of the total in the future. “The issues raised underscore the need for a strong focus on technology to help inform, service and control risk management programs. With so much changing in the marketplace, technology is a strong tool to build effective risk management programs,” comments John Ryan, vice president of commercial marketing at Liberty Mutual.
