Toronto, ON, June 7, 2011 – Chubb Insurance Company of Canada has created a first by donating a damaged large format transfer drawing to the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation for Conservative Education. The Foundation is dedicated to conserving works by Robert Rauschenberg, considered one of the Top Ten most influential Artists of the 20th Century.

“We have never seen any other donation of this kind,” states Christy MacLear, Executive Director, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.

The piece donated by Chubb Insurance, entitled “Maze,” is from the well-known Hoarfrost Series. Chubb took possession of the work after settling an insurance claim with a private collector after the piece was damaged by water.

The Toronto based collector, a Chubb customer, was pleased to hear about the donation. “Our decision to donate this piece to the Rauschenberg Foundation was an easy one,” stated Ivana Porterfield, Unit Manager for the Chubb Insurance Service Centre in Canada. “The Foundation has the ability to research and educate about restoration techniques, as well as share it with the greatest interested public audience.

” While the value of this particular piece is not available, examples of the Hoarfrost series routinely sell for five to six figure values. Rauschenberg’s work incorporates various objects, including fabric into a painted canvas surface or mixed medium, creating a union of painting and sculpture.

“Chubb’s gift is a very unusual and wonderful gesture. They are thinking of the world in another way and benefitting scholarship and conservatory education in the process,” adds Ms. MacLear. “Bob Rauschenberg used unusual materials, so conservation of contemporary work such as his can be challenging and this donation will be very instructional for scholars.”

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation is a private foundation based in New York City. The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation seeks to further the artist’s philanthropic and educational initiatives and to preserve and advance global understanding of the legacy of Robert Rauschenberg’s life and artwork.
