In support of Mental Illness Awareness Week, Cira Medical Services is leading the conversation for Canadian employers to focus on resiliency as a key to understanding mental health

TORONTO (October 10, 2014) — As part of Cira Medical Services (Cira)’s commitment to helping Canadians live healthier lives, Cira is dedicated to raising awareness around mental health issues, especially to support healthy workforces. Consistent with this focus, Cira announced today its support for Mental Illness Awareness Week, an annual campaign initiated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Health Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) which takes place from October 5-11, 2014.

A fundamental objective of CAMIMH is to “engage Canadians in a national conversation about mental illness.” As a leading medical assessment provider in Canada, each year Cira performs thousands of mental health assessments for clients across a wide array of industries. This year, Cira aims to engage Canadians through educating employers and individuals on the importance and value of building resiliency in the workplace.

Today’s ever-changing economy and job market means that workplaces in all industries are subject to constant changes to remain competitive, from expansion to downsizing, from restructuring to rebranding. It is the resilient workplace that not only withstands major changes but thrives when faced with these challenges.

Resilient individuals are flexible, open to change, and in control under stressful situations. Encouraging resilience in the workplace can lead to better mental health for individuals and all employees. Furthermore, employees with higher resiliency are more likely to take decisive action under pressure, and are better prepared to cope in the face of adversity, and continue functioning—both physically and psychologically—even under circumstances of pain, anger, depression, or shock. A key component to resilience is being a part of a network of support, including a supportive workplace. For several important tips on how to build workplace resiliency, visit Cira’s website here.

“Resiliency is the key to fostering a healthy, engaged, and productive workforce,” says Karen Seward, President of Cira Medical Services. “With the right tools and education, employers can apply very simple, proactive strategies to build a more resilient organization.”

Ms. Seward will lead the discussion on building workplace resiliency to organizational leaders across Canada at the 2014 Benefits Canada Mental Health Summit Series. Cira is a proud sponsor of the national Mental Health Summit Series taking place on November 5, 2014 in Montreal, November 12, 2014 in Toronto, and December 3, 2014 in Vancouver.
