Toronto— Cira Medical Services, the Canadian market leader in clinical risk management, yesterday hosted seminars on workplace health strategies and trends in the IME industry.

Close to 100 leaders in workplace health and senior members of the medico-legal and property and casualty insurer communities attended the Cira-hosted seminars, held at the Trump International Hotel in downtown Toronto.

Karen Seward, President of Cira Medical Services, and Dr. Shelley Perlman, MD, Medical Consultant with Cira Medical Services, were the featured guest speakers at the seminar on workplace health strategies. The two speakers discussed key insights on ways to manage physical and mental health in the workplace, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, accommodation and recovery, as well as proactive solutions for building new workplace health strategies, including Cira’s newly developed independent medical assessment service called Health Assess. Seminar attendees also received an advance copy of a new Cira white paper, “Balancing Workplace Mental Health Issues and Employee Privacy Rights”.

The seminar on IME industry trends featured a wide range of speakers and topics, including: Dr. Avi Orner, MD, MBA, CCFP, Medical Director at Cira Medical Services, who gave an overview of Cira’s clinical risk management services; Dr. Sheldon Levy, MD, Consultant, Cira Medical Services, who discussed the CAT Executive Summary report; Sean Aylward, Partner, Taxation at Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt LLP, who provided a review of IME services and HST in the wake of the 2013 Federal Budget; Dr. David Gratzer, MD, FRCPC, Attending Psychiatrist at The Scarborough Hospital and author of Code Blue: Reviving Canada’s Health Care System, who provided a review of pain disorders and a look ahead at the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual – Fifth Edition (DSM-V); and Charlotte Hasson, PhD, Manager of Psychological Quality Assurance at Cira, who discussed the Minor Injury Guideline (MIG) and associated mental and behavioural implications.

“The seminars provided industry representatives and workplace health professionals with an opportunity to gain some practical insight into where the IME industry is headed as well as some new strategies for managing the increasingly important issue of mental health in the workplace,” said Karen Seward, Cira President. “Initiatives such as today’s seminars and our forthcoming series of white papers demonstrate why Cira is at the forefront of clinical risk management in Canada.”
