After several days of heavy rainfall, a number of communities throughout Southern Alberta, including Calgary, Canmore, and Turner Valley, have declared a State of Local Emergency in response to significant flooding around major waterways. In Calgary alone, tens of thousands of residents have already been evacuated and numerous road and bridge closures are in effect due to flooding of the Bow and Elbow rivers. High River and Black Diamond have also had major evacuations. Power has been shut down in many areas for the safety of local rescue teams, and the Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed to support rescue efforts. With more rainfall in the forecast, residents are being asked to remain alert and check with their official city website for emergency updates. Visit www.calgarycitynews.com for a full list of road closures and evacuation areas in Calgary.
