The residents of Thunder Bay, Ontario experienced tremendous storms over the past week, and the city remains in a “State of Emergency” due to the city’s water infrastructure not being able to handle more than the 100mm of rain it received on Sunday, May 27th. Thousands of residents’ homes were severely damaged by water damage and subsequent sewage backups, ultimately resulting in many residents having to leave their homes due to their uninhabitable condition.

The Red Cross of Thunder Bay has approximately 100 Canadian Red Cross volunteers from Thunder Bay on scene, ready to provide comfort and support to those most impacted, including providing basic needs such as shelter, food and water. In addition, there are other Red Cross volunteers from across Ontario ready for deployment at any time, if needed.

Red Cross has set up a reception centre and temporary relief shelter at the Neebing Arena on Broadway Avenue for anyone requiring assistance, including access to information, food, water supplies and shelter. Working with community officials, the Red Cross will help conduct an assessment to determine the needs of the most vulnerable families affected by the flooding, including at least 100 homes that have been left without any power. Part of the needs assessment will be to determine which families have insurance, or have pressing needs.

Paul Davis Systems of Thunder Bay together with fellow Paul Davis Systems locations of: Brantford, Muskoka, Halton/Hamilton-Wentworth, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Cornwall/ Brockville, Sarnia, and London donated a total of $3000 to the Red Cross in order to assist with their relief efforts. Shaun Talbot, a project manager with Paul Davis Systems of Thunder Bay, presented the donation cheque to Red Cross this past week.

Marge Enders, CSC Coordinator, First Aid & Injury Prevention, Canadian Red Cross stated “Your generosity was overwhelming; we were very touched by your donation and your promise to continue to assist with the efforts here in Thunder Bay.  Your efforts are so greatly appreciated.”
