Up to $15,000 in scholarships will be available as part of the fourth edition of the program, managed by the Insurance Institute of Ontario, notes a TIC statement. The program provides financial assistance for as many as three $5,000 scholarships to staff and families of TIC brokers, partners and staff, as well as other applicants planning a career in an insurance brokerage. “Selection is based on academic excellence throughout the applicant’s high school and first year post-secondary career, financial need, contribution to school, community life and/or other meaningful pursuits, major accomplishments and a strong indication of academic promise,” TIC explains. Applicants for the program founded in 2013 to raise awareness of career opportunities available within the commercial insurance broker industry must be pursuing full-time university undergraduate studies in Canada. In announcing the call for applications this spring, “we want to spread the word about the dynamic careers our members offer, many of which involve leading-edge business issues and are global in scope,” said TIC president Sean Duggan. “Many candidates may not realize that their existing skill-sets and current educational path present potential that can be leveraged into a rewarding and successful commercial insurance brokerage career with virtually unlimited opportunities,” Duggan noted at the time. Applications to the program close Sept. 9. Potential applicants can visit www.ticonf.com/tic-scholarship-program/ for more information. Daniella Laferriere, a commerce student at the Smith School of Business (formerly Queen’s University), was the recipient of two TIC scholarships in the past three years. “The scholarship allowed me to focus on my studies while at Queen’s, and gave me the opportunity to spend a semester studying at the Cologne Business School in Germany,” Laferriere reports. Soon entering her fourth year of university, she says that she is grateful for the opportunities winning the scholarship has afforded. “I am taking advantage of them as I start my career in the insurance world,” she emphasizes.
