Delphi Information Systems has officially launched ebix.com, their internet-based data exchange system that allows insurers, brokers and consumers to communicate, exchange quotes and conduct business online. Currently, only U.S. consumers can purchase insurance through the site.

As first reported in CU’s February 1999 edition, ebix.com combines portal and e-mail technology to create a Yahoo!-style web site which focuses on all aspects of the insurance industry. The focal point of the site for insurance consumers is ebix.mall which allows customers to buy insurance over the net in a reverse auction manner. For the industry, the site provides a business-to-business workflow engine for brokers and insurers. Already, 70 agencies representing 33 states have registered to quote rates online.

As of late September, Delphi announced the site had received 750,000 hits in its first three weeks from U.S. based insurers, brokers, agents and consumers. The company has not yet announced plans to introduce ebix.com service into Canada but at its original announcement in February, Raina indicated Delphi will conduct business in Canada. Already, the product is familiar to some of the global insurers operating divisions in Canada. Royal & SunAlliance’s Australian division were one of the first to test the product, utilizing the site to communicate with brokers brokers across the country.
